Due to the heat, we are moving the Wed peavine run to 6:30PM.  Hope ya'll can make it.  Ken

Also- Brian Peacock, PHD from Embry-Riddle sent me a chart on the effect of aging...most interesting and more of a linear progression than other pieces of info I have obtained that show a bigger dropoff with age, especially after 60.  This is good news for us OLDIE BUT GOODIES!

Congrats to Dan Munsell and Steve Orth for their efforts in the Gaspin in the Aspen 15K race in Flag on 6/20.  Their times:

23 DAN MUNSELL 46 96.02 Masters Male
24 Steve Orth 48 97.26 Masters Male

Good job Dan and Steve!!  Dan is doing the entire Flag summer series.  I am slowly coming back to life after my 24 hour race in Minneapolis and will be returning to the racing scene in the Big Bros/Big Sis event on 8/11 if anyone wants to carpool with me...I will be happy to drive and we have a Murano so I can take a group and still have room for bags.

BOSTON! BOSTON! BOSTON! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ken Ekman
Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Just wanted to post a quick update and I will put up some pics tonight.  The Boston trip was spectacular.  The running weather was really good and Heidi, Dan and Serena all did terrific!

Heidi Schuette took center stage in the US Olympic Trials for the marathon on Sunday (4/20).  The volume of spectators was overwhelming and Heidi hung with one of the chase packs through a blistering 6:09 pace for 13 miles!  Although she tired a little in the last mile or so, that pace melted some 38 women who dropped from the race after giving it their best shot.  Heidi hung in and finished 102nd in 2:52:20.

If you think in terms of the best 152 women marathoners in the country at the starting line and everyone of them typically WIN every race they enter, and 38 of them could not finish while trying to keep up with the wicked pace - how good is 102nd??

AWESOME - SAY NO MORE!  Congratulations Heidi - you are indeed awesome.

Dan "the man" Pemble took over on Monday and smoked a 2:46 marathon finishing 328th of some 25,000!  Dan was WAY FAST although he was nearly distracted as he passed Wellesley College and saw a sign held up by a young coed, "Kiss me I am Single".   It took some real focus for Dan to keep going and not circle back around for that kiss!  Way to go Dan, we are proud of you.  However, next year I have a strong feeling that should there be a repeat of the circumstances, your time may be slowed just a little - somewhere around Wellesley!

Serena Lackey fighting off some last minute colds and training issues, ran the Boston in 3:37!  This is her 2nd marathon after qualifying in her first attempt in Long Beach.  Oh the youth!  Serena intentionally bagged the last 10 minutes so that I wouldn't win the gift certificate we had for guessing her time (I took 3:27).  I just know she bagged me intentionally...

Anyway, Steve and I had super fun and after seeing it in person, I need to qualify next year.  Hope some of you will qualify  as well and we'll have a significant group there.  7000 race volunteers and an estimated 500,000 (yes - a half a million!) cheering/screaming spectators lined the streets and now I am motivated!

Go Fast.  Run Boston.

Newsflash

4/11 run - Our final WRM training series was held on another gorgeous Saturday as we did 6.6 miles in the upper section of the half marathon course.  Deb Cowell, Janice Leufkens, Clodagh Stokes and a last minute/surprise guest Andrea Niggemeier - a 2 time champion of the Philadelphia marathon - took on the tough mountain section.  We hope to see Andrea again as she was visiting friends here and after talking to her, I found out that she is friends with Ellen Strickler - many of you will remember that Phil Wharton and wife Ellen started our MM running club!  Andrea and Ellen were in a running club together in Philly and stay in touch.  Small world, eh?

I will be in Boston this weekend and Payson the following weekend with the WRM on Sat May 3rd.  If anyone wishes to meet Saturdays for training runs the next 2 weekends, let me know and I will post something on this website ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Lastly congrats to Deb Cowell and Steve Orth for running a 2:15 half in the inaugural Lake Havasu half marathon!

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a tough training run and we will repeat the same next Saturday.  This is basically the 2nd 10K of the marathon course which covers some of the toughest parts of the marathon and half marathon courses.  It is only 4 weeks until the WRM!  Come out and prep this Saturday with some of your fellow club members.

Good luck to Steve Orth and Deb Cowell who will be traveling to Lake Havasu for The Lake Havasu half marathon, the first year of this event.

9AM Sat. 4/11 -- same location we started this Saturday, at the Hassayampa clubhouse just a half mile up Hassayampa Village off Gurley.   It is just at the top of the first hill (on the west side) as you turn off Gurley and onto Hassaymampa village lane.   See ya there!

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to those who made the run on Saturday and to Julie for meeting us at the turnaround with water!

This Saturday we will meet at the Hassayampa clubhouse (where we turned around on Sat.) just a half mile up Hassayampa Village off Gurley.   It is just at the top of the first hill (on the west side) as you turn off Gurley and onto Hassaymampa village lane.  We will do the 2nd 10K of the Whiskey Row marathon - a tough 10K!

See ya there!!

PS:  We need volunteers for the Pioneer Days 10K July 4th weekend.

Jessica from the Y will be at our first WRM training series runs beginning this Saturday, March 29 starting at Pearl's Place on Montezuma (Whiskey Row) across from the Courthouse at 9AM

You can choose what you want to run but we will pretty much cover the first 10K of the race.  Hope you can make it, Saturday 3/29 at 9AM.

We will carve out additional sections the following 3 weeks as well.
